Resonance

Resonance is a collection that examines the intimate relationship between sound, structure, and the body, reinterpreting the internal architecture of musical instruments as a foundation for garment design. The project begins with a study of how instruments generate tone—how tension, vibration, air, and material density shape the character of sound. By shifting focus from the visible exterior to the hidden internal mechanisms, the collection uncovers a world of chambers, bridges, ribs, strings, and resonant cavities that quietly determine the voice of an instrument. These internal elements become the blueprint for silhouettes, construction, and modular adjustments within the garments.

Through a surreal and magnified lens, Resonance transforms functional components into dramatic volumes and sculptural forms. Curved ribs inspire structural seams that wrap around the torso; tensioning devices become adjustable garment features that tighten or release like the tuning of a string; layered cavities influence hollowed forms that echo the spatial acoustics of woodwind and string instruments. Each piece is designed to shift and respond to movement, creating visual rhythms that parallel musical dynamics—crescendo, diminuendo, resonance, and silence.

Central to the collection is the idea of the garment as an extension of the wearer, just as an instrument becomes an extension of the musician’s voice, emotion, and physical expression. In this framework, clothing is not passive; it participates in the act of performance. Adjustable components allow the wearer to modify shape and tension, symbolically “tuning” the garment as one might tune pitch. This interactivity emphasizes the fluid relationship between body and object, form and function, stillness and sound.

Material choices support this narrative of structural resonance. Textiles with contrasting densities mimic acoustic behavior, while rigid and flexible components create tension analogous to vibrating strings against wooden bodies.
