Metamorphosis is a women’s boxing focus mitt inspired by Alexander McQueen’s A/W 2018 Womenswear collection, which centered on transformation and the juxtaposition between hard and soft, creating a sense of dark, beautiful power. Women’s boxing aligns naturally with Alexander McQueen’s design ethos. Boxing requires discipline, precision, and presence rather than uncontrolled aggression. The sport demands both physical and psychological strength, mirroring McQueen’s exploration of power expressed through form, silhouette, and restraint. His statement, “I want people to be afraid of the women I dress,” speaks not to fear as intimidation, but to fear as respect.
This project translates the narrative of McQueen into functional sports equipment, using women’s boxing as an expression of the McQueen woman. Focus mitts are utilized by the coach, where the fighter strikes the mitt through punches or kicks, protecting the trainer from impact.
The focus mitt is constructed from black calfskin leather, selected for its durability, weight, and association with luxury accessories. A lace backhand references classic femininity while remaining purposeful by providing breathability and structure. The knuckles securing the hand to the glove are adorned with bejeweled insects, inspired by McQueen’s iconic knuckle clutches. These details transform the mitt from a purely utilitarian object into one that communicates power, beauty, and control.
By merging luxury materials with athletic function, Metamorphosis reframes women’s boxing equipment as intentional beauty. The result is an object that juxtaposes force and femininity, reflecting the duality inherent in both women’s boxing and Alexander McQueen’s design language.
